Bwabwata National Park - Another Namibian First

We all know of the massive strides that Namibia has made in terms of conservation. Not only is it the first country to have included conservation in its constitution upon independence, but it is the only country that has managed to grow its rhino populations to such an extent that they can be taken out of conservancies and re-introduced into their former range areas.

Namibia is at the fore-front of community conservation, giving local populations ownership of their conservancies and thus ensuring that these animals have more value to them alive, rather than dead - and now this has extended to include the Bwabwata National Park in the Caprivi Strip. This National Park is unique in that it supports not only large wildlife populations, but also large human populations.

The Bwabwata National Park is the first in Namibia where communities are allowed to live within the National Park, and have rights over the wildlife, subject to quotas set by the government. This has meant that this region has gone from being a poaching 'hot-spot' during the early '90s to one where, after the re-introduction of local species, tsessebe, sitatunga and buffalo are once again flourishing.

The then Caprivi Game Park was originally declared in the 1960's, but there was no wildlife management put in place because the area was designated as a restricted security zone and many of the locals were conscripted into the army, this, and the spillover of the Angolan civil war led to high incidents of poaching throughout the Park.

In 1992 a community game guard system was put in place by the Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET) and since then the wildlife in the National Park has been relocated to the newly named Bwabwata National Park.

Comparative wildlife surveys are incredibly encouraging in 1978 there was only one breeding herd of elephant, totalling 35 animals. Today there are about 340 animals in the area, with thousands migrating through this area. There was only 1 Sable and 1 Hippo, compared with the 277 and 350 (respectively) that are found there today.

The local conservation initiatives have a system in place which compensates the inhabitants of the National Park should they lose livestock to predators or their crops get damaged. The Kyaramacan Residents Association (KA) oversees these processes, together with the community-based tourism developments and employs 27 community game guards to monitor the human/wildlife interactions and also assist the MET with game counts.

Through these efforts and the work done by the local communities the Bwabwata national Park is changing the face of conservation and tourism in Namibia!

England's Loveliest Town

There is almost always something going on: regular festivals take place in or around the Norman castle; speciality markets in the town square; in the season, National Hunt racing; not to mention all the good eating available, including Michelin-starred restaurants and the famous Food Festival in September.

Ludlow bustles with events and festivals throughout the year. Ludlow Festival is held in June/July attracting performers from all over the world. In addition to works by William Shakespeare famous orchestras, string-quartets, brass bands, jazz bands, choirs and solo performances all take place during the festival.

The Ludlow Medieval Christmas Fayre conjures up romantic visions of Merrie England with jesters and minstrels, carols and wassailing as well as knights in shining armour. The event will be held in 2012 on the 24th and 25th November with the beautiful medieval castle providing the backdrop.

The centrepiece of Ludlow's year is the annual Food Festival, probably the best in Britain, which takes place on the 7th to 9th September in 2012 It was Britain's first successful food and drink festival when it started back in 1995. It has grown considerably since then, yet stayed firmly with the original idea of highlighting the great food and drink that is available in the surrounding area. The festival will feature more than 160 top quality small independent food and drink producers from the Marches, the England-Wales border country and takes place inside the castle. As well as the food producers, throughout Ludlow's historic town centre there is seemingly no end of food-related events, such as the famous Ludlow Sausage trail, Ale trail and the Festival Loaf trail, not forgetting all the old favourites both inside and outside the castle, including great demonstrations, talks, pudding tastings, markets and more.

The Ludlow Spring Festival was introduced more recently and this smaller event was marketed in 2012 as, 'a beer festival but better' with the slogan 'beer, bangers and bread'. More than 8,000 people from across the UK - including television presenter Ade Edmondson - descended on Ludlow to enjoy the event.

The city is only about 10 blocks long and five blocks wide so don't expect a whole lot besides the supermarket and cinema. But the natural sights are what you came for anyway.

There are accommodations to fit all budgets. Most are downtown and near the oceanfront. One of the better hotels is Posada del Mar with air-conditioned rooms overlooking the waterfront. The Cristalmar Resort and Beach Club is south of town has a great beach, pool and modern facilities. There are a number of budget hotels but be careful because the conditions and service vary greatly from day to day.

The outlying reefs are great for diving and snorkeling. The windward side is best but only when the seas are calm. The coral rocks are quite dangerous when the water is rough. Local dive shops provide day trips out to the farther reefs for snorkeling and diving.

Charter a local boat for a deep-sea fishing trip. Grouper, barracuda, tuna and red snapper are in abundance year round while in the spring you can catch the bigger fish like dorado, marlin and sailfish.

Every year the Club de Yates of Isla Mujeres puts on a sailing regatta near the end of April. Also, the Regatta Amigos takes place several times throughout the year. These events turn into one big party for the whole island with costumes, dancing, music, food and tequila.

At Playa Norte Beach (the previously referred to topless beach) is on the north edge of town. The water is shallow, blue and calm with cafes close by. Sailboarding and water skiing are popular as is the local three-wheeled floating "bike". Not far away is another beautiful and quiet beach, Playa Lancheros.

On the south end of the small island is a reconstructed ancient Mayan temple. It sits on a cliff with a wonderful view over the ocean. This makes a good excuse to take a walk and see the island.

Garrafon Beach is the one spot that seems to draw the most tourists. Probably because it's such a good spot for snorkeling. Avoid the crowds by going early. The beach has a coral reef that is perfect for beginner snorkeling and children. You can have fun actually feeding the fish. Not too far out you can get a look at some sunken cannon, an anchor and the resident angelfish.

If you go in October, don't miss the Isla Mujeres International Music Festival. It starts on the second weekend of the month and goes for 12 days of music and dancing.
